New York, NY – August 10, 2020 – The Research Institute of United States Spanish (RIUSS) calls on the country’s Spanishlanguage media to use the terms approved by the Real Academia Española (RAE) and the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE) regarding the translations of “billion” and “trillion.” These terms are again prominent in the government’s economic relief messages to taxpayers due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
For many years, we have heard of a distinct “Mexican Spanish,” “Argentine Spanish,” or “Colombian Spanish.” Our Spanish, that of the United States, has not been allowed to enter that club of nations whose Spanish has been recognized – and accepted – as different, not wrong, just different. The American Bar Association (ABA) at its annual conference in June passed a motion calling for a uniform Spanish language translation of the Miranda Rights, thereby earning the Research Institute of United States Spanish (RIUSS) “Thumbs Up” designation. The action occurred on the 50th anniversary of the “Miranda warning” that arose in the March 1963 arrest of Ernesto Miranda in Phoenix, Arizona. (more…)
